66606, Dances of the changing woman, AR3001, Adam Sherkin, 00:06:25
The Navajo myth of the Changing Woman recounts the story of a beautiful deity who was imbued with life by her admirer: the Sun. Struck by love, the Sun built the Changing Woman a house far in a western valley surrounded by four mountains. The Changing Woman danced on the summit of each mountain to create aspects of our living world: Her dance on the eastern mountain created rain clouds, producing soft, life-giving rain. Her dance on the southern mountain brought forth luminous jewels and woven fabrics. Her dance on the western mountain caused plants and flowers to take seed in great abundance. Her dance in the northern mountain gave birth to the many animals that would come to sustain life on Earth. It is said that the Sun returns to his lover, in the house he built for her, at the end of each day. For the Sun always sets in the west. Notes by Adam Sherkin, 2012
