Premiere
March 2008, First United Church, Waterloo, ON. Wellington Winds with Jenny Enns-Modolo (mezzo), Joe Schwartz (bassoon), and Virginia Scarfino (bassoon). Michael Purves-Smith, conductor.
This little concerto was written for a special occasion that required a work with an English theme, on top of which the program promised to feature a mezzo soprano and two bassoonists as soloists. As it happens, the bass section of the band as a whole gets a special workout. Therefore, the second bass clarinet, the second tuba, and string bass parts are all indispensable.
The text for the first movement is an 18th century children's nonsense poem. With the exception of one bar from the Davey Crockett tune, which struck me as being superlatively banal, and therefore especially appropriate for the occasion, all the material in this movement is original. The second and third movements are built from some lovely poetry and tunes from John Gay's Beggars' Opera of the same period. The title, Grub Street, derives from the name of the street where the London literary scene took place in those days.
