The Beauty of Reason This piece celebrates reason, beauty, and the very human capacity for wonder. Music making is an effective metaphor for civilized diplomacy: different instruments come together not to meld and assimilate but to co-exist together in sound. Compositions become conversations, reveal relationships, and even play out as full-blown arguments (sonata form, after all, is all about the exploration of different musical themes!). As I composed The Beauty of Reason, I imagined a spirited relationship between both the cello and harp, and between distinct musical ideas – one forceful, driving, and uncompromising, and the other supple, lyrical, and nuanced. Through the course of the work, these conversations twist and turn, arriving at the final section where all of the ideas present in the piece at last are allowed to co-exist harmoniously in their own spaces – the beauty of reason.
