E. Pauline Johnson (1862-1913) was born on the Six Nations Indian Reserve, Brant County, Upper Canada. She was the daughter of a Mohawk Chief and began publishing poetry in her teens. She used her Indian name Tekahionwake, touring Canada, England, and the United States, giving poetry recitals celebrating her Native heritage. When I first discovered her poetry, I found myself wanting to sing it from the page, rather than actually read it. Her visions of the natural beauty, climate and people of the northern landscape touched me as an immigrant to Canada. "With 'Lullaby of the Iroquois", I wanted to create a hypnotic mood of might descending in the camp. "Lady Icicle", with its close harmonies, vocal 'scoops' and 'slides' should not take itself too seriously. It needs to have more of a 'forties - Andrews Sisters' feel." (from the score)
