Dedicated to Raymond Daveluy. Commissioned by CBC. Pastourelle is the first composition for organ by Alain Gagnon, professor of analysis and composition at Laval University School of Music. The entire work is based on two principal ideas which are presented contrapuntally at the opening. These ideas are then repeated, varied, and become a source of further evolution in the musical discourse. There are two reasons why "pastourelle" is an appropriate title for this piece: firstly, the basic idea is in the pentatonic mode; secondly, the development of this basic idea in the form of a dialogue with its associated theme is reminiscent of an certain type of medieval lyric poem in which the traditional characters are a shepherdess and a knight. L.P.
