A Celt on the Great Wall is a fantasy piece in which a Celt (someone of Irish decent) explores the Great Wall. The piece is programmatic in nature but the plot, time period, and various other details are left to the imagination of the listener. The first movement is a slow sentimental exploration of the legend of Meng Jiang Nu (???) using the folk song of the same name and the Irish folk song The Kesh Jig.The more upbeat second movement explores the more heroic and majestic history of the Great Wall. Written in sonata form, this movement uses two original themes, one in a Chinese folk style and the other in an Irish folk style. There is a short interlude in which two more folk songs are introduced and become intertwined: Feng Yang (????) and The Minstrel Boy.
