Silver City was written to celebrate the Kensington Sinfonia’s silver anniversary season. It is a musical portrait of the sudden rise and fall of one of Alberta’s most famous ghost towns. The piece describes the events that took place in the area during 1883 to 1885: a depiction of the quiet, unpopulated mountain meadow; the arrival of the CPR, bringing a trickster character to the scene; the trickster’s seductive tale of precious metals to be mined; the optimism of the prospectors who built the town; their fury when they discover that they had been duped, and their subsequent dismantling of the town; and a return to the mountain meadow.
