Premiere

The Gabriola Tidepools is inspired by the beautiful tide pools at Gabriola Island, British Columbia. These miniature worlds of sea life suggested to me music with a well defined theme melodically and rhythmically that circumscribes the improvisation of details it inspires. The work is part of a series of pieces each inspired by tide pools in different geographical locations. The Gabriola Tidepools is dedicated to Vancouver Community Gamelan who commissioned the work. It was premiered by the ensemble on Gamelan Alligator Joy (a Javanese chamber gamelan set). They have toured the piece and performed it on Gabriola Island. The work has also been performed by the students of Simon Fraser University under the direction of Michael O’Neill on a full gamelan set called Gamelan Madu Sari. The Gabriola Tidepools is also suitable for non-gamelan instruments.
