Le Tombeau de Nelligan is basically in sonata form (exposition - development - reexposition) but it integrates the spirit of a continued variation as the melodic elements used come from the initial theme announced by the flute. Sometimes calm and expressive, sometimes violent and dramatic, oscillating between the singing of the winds dominated by the English horn and the explosion for the full force of the orchestra, the music unfurls in stages, sketching a huge curve that closes im on itself in the final metamorphosis of the theme (played by the cellos) ending this essentially lyrical piece in an introspective and crepuscular atmosphere.
