My Suite “ANCIENT LEGENDS – THE MYSTERY OF THE PAGAN DANCES” is a little musical picture from the rudimentary past of my country Bulgaria. It includes: hot, unique ritual pagan dances on burning coals at midnight (Pagan Dance and Valkiria), parts of peace and harmony (Pacification) and Mystery (Mystery of the full Moon). With the energy of my rhythmic musical streams (fluxes), I want to present the mystery of Fire’s energy, of dancers in ecstasy, of this unique Night Dances. I explore the correlations between national musical traditions, specific rhythms of the Bulgarian national music of irregular divisions - 7/8, 9/8, 11/8 and contemporary orchestral language. These irregular rhythms from East Europe, named by Béla Bartók “ The Bulgarian rhythms “, can be found in the compositions of Igor Stravinsky, Béla Bartók, Zoltán Kodály, etc.). My composition presents the spiritual atmosphere of ancient Bulgarian pagan ritual dances “Nestinari” on burning coals - an amazing phenomenon in Bulgarian folklore. Fire dancing (“nestinari”) is an ancient pagan mysterious ritual. Barefooted dancers (“nestinari”) perform in a trance a dance on burning embers. For Nestinari, dancing on embers is a personal spiritual ritual that cleanses and brings insight into past, present and future. This religious and mystical ritual is done to expel illness, for health and for bountifulness. It must be seen to be believed. P.C. When Christianity entered the Bulgarian culture, this dance was transformed – it became dedicated to Christian saints; the dancers began to perform it holding an icon in their hands. Nowadays, visitors can see “nestinari” performing for tourists in cultural attractions. Vania Angelova
Vania Angelova
