Composer's Note "While visiting my daughter in England one August, I saw outside my window in the countryside of Buckinghamshire, a shower of shooting stars. Immediately I thought of my pianist friend, Toshiko Tampo. Her birthday is August 10, the date on which sees most shooting stars in the northern hemisphere. I decided to write her a birthday present. In Nagareboshi I tried to evoke the vastness of the night skies in Sapporo, Toshiko's hometown - the great flashes of hundreds of tiny stars falling into somewhere unseen in black space. Movement I portrays the falling of stars; Movement II, the restless nature of multiple illuminated bits of matter, and Movement III, the elusive nature of these lighted particles which seem so close, but are indeed so far from one's grasp. Lyrical lines represent the infinitely small and fragile human being against the great power of the unknown, unseen, unheard elements of the universe."
