This composition depicts an imaginary utopia of a mystical nature, similar to the island of Taiwan for its glowing peace and spirituality. This work evolves from a simple vocal line quoting melodies from two Taiwanese folk melodies (??????) “???”, “??”. These folk tunes are transformed and reinvented into a set of free variations. The Mandarin lyrics are quoted from a Hakka folk song “Hakka Tea”: ???? (??????). The words of the folk song are chosen to highlight the gentle and loving nature of human voice, which relates to the idea of “Shangri-la”. The title of the composition “????” is also inspired by the ornate pagoda-style of many worshiping structures of Tanan, known as the “Temple City”, the music pays tribute to the ritual and commemoration of an imaginary “past society”, depicting a non-violent world of ancient living: the ancestral spirits, secret prayer, as well as making peace to the powerful forces of nature.
