Nuovo Gamelan 2009 began as a conversation with Derek Charke, one of the artistic directors of the "Shattering the Silence" new music festival in Wolfville Nova Scotia. Given the availability of multiple exceptional percussionists, I decided to create a work that would express the essence of the sound experience of Gamelan as processed by my own personal musical style. As the piece evolved I was aware of yet another influence which began to push the work forward, but which I was not immediately able to identify. Finally, towards the end of the composition of Nuovo Gamelan I realized that this other influence was from a 1970's British rock band called "Gentle Giant". It was my brother Mike Bauer who introduced me to "Gentle Giant", so I thought it only fitting to dedicate my new work to him. Commissioned by: Shattering the Silence Festival
