“Ode to Tallis” by Marjan Mozetich was commissioned by CBC radio in 2005 especially for this concert to commemorate the 500th Birthday of Thomas Tallis. The text was written by the composer except for the Sanctus taken from the ordinary of the mass. Much of the musical material is strongly based on Tallis’s “Lamentation of Jeremiah 1”. The music very much reflects the meaning of the text. ODE TO TALLIS text (except for Sanctus) by Marjan Mozetich Thomas Tallis, we honour you today. You who humbly served kings and queens: Henry, Edward, Mary, Elizabeth. And yet, your music was forever to the praise of God; All for the glory of the almighty creator of heaven and earth. May we too not forget this world Is but a pulse in the firmament of Heaven. We may feel to be kings and queens, Creators of our own heaven on earth; Yet let us not forget we are but a speck In the churning galaxies of the Almighty: God, Eloheinu (Hebrew=my god), Mon Dieu, Allah, Bog (Slavic=God). Let us worship: Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth, Pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua.Hosanna in excelsis. Alleluia ( Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts, Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Alleluia.) Thomas Tallis, nous vous honorons; (Thomas Tallis, we honour you;) Créateur de musique sublime (Creator of sublime musique) Pour la plus grande gloire de Dieu, (for the greater glory of God.) Elohim (Hebrew=God), Allah, Deus, God, Bog. Ohm.
