Premiere
13 July 2014, Chamberfest Music and Beyond, Ottawa, Ontario. Matthew Larkin, organ
PLAINCHANT (CANTUS PLANUS): “Seeing that the Church allows in its liturgical service not only the human voice, but an accompaniment thereof by the organ or other instruments, and even organ and instruments without the human voice, it follows that in the sense in which we are going to use it, liturgical chant means liturgical music, or, to employ the more usual phrase, sacred music. Thus, it may be considered sacred music as embodying four distinct, but subordinate elements: -cantus planus (plainchant); -harmonized chant; -one or other of these accompanied by organ and instruments; -organ and instruments alone.” ? Angelo de Santi: Liturgical Chant, The Catholic Encyclopedia, Vol. 9. New York: Robert Appleton Company, 1910. 24 Nov. 2013. I composed an original melody for Plainchant using a different approach to the idea of cantus planus.? I linked two different musical eras by employing a traditional perspective as well as a free adaptation of my melodic idea. I used a limited amount of compositional material and techniques in order to achieve a religious, serene atmosphere within a piece of music written for organ. - Maya Badian
