Beware the Shrouded Moor is a quote taken from the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles. There is an eerie feeling of walking across a barren landscape shrouded in fog which can be a terrifying experience.
This music tries to evoke the emotions that one might endure if they were lost at night in the fog, knowing there is danger lurking. In this case, according to Doyle, a florescent mad dog. Fear, anxiety and panic are some of the moods created through music.
The piece is constructed with a twelve tone row (C, Eb, D, G, Gb, Db, Bb, A, E, Cb, Ab, F). This piece is primarily about utilizing the entire orchestra as a colour palette. The ranges of the individual instruments are not extreme. The music is trying to recreate what would be inside the head of an individual who is in great distress.
