I am impressed by the variety of peoples and cultures living in peace in this country! As a composer, I try to symbolize in my music that particular Canadian multiculturalism, to express the visual into sound. I conceived "Canadian Soundscapes" Symphonic Suite to reflect a synthesis of recollections of the Past Millennium with a vision of this Millennium’s sonorities. This composition embodies six modules presenting a Canadian musical panorama: Module I, Roots; Module II, Indigenous Canadians; Module III, French Canadians; Module IV, English Canadians; Module V, Our Days Canadians; Module VI, Celebrations. Concerning the songs, I crafted original imaginary folklore tunes, each of which contains epitomes of an ethnic group living in Canada. This procedure generates a wonderful multicultural “canvas”. The melodies, songs, dances and other spiritual values meaningfully enrich the unique Canadian multiculturalism, strongly building its national heritage. Module I, ROOTS: Section A, LIMITLESS TIME - CANADA’S FIRST INHABITANTS, uses simultaneous mobiles that suggests a sonorous ambiance of various cultural groups living before the Confederation in Canada. Scored for 35 strings and heard simultaneously, the various musical configurations of Canada’s First Inhabitants are used to reflect on the history of their interaction, culminating in the Canadian Confederation of 1867. Section B, EPHEMERAL SPACE – CANADA’S VAST LAND, refers to Canada’s vast territory. The non-evolving, static form interfaces with folkloric material. Module II, INDIGENOUS CANADIANS, alluding to Variations on a Theme, uses certain archetypal structures as found in some musical expressions of a few of Canada’s First Nations, Inuit and Métis. The listeners are transposed back, in time, to the roots of Canada’s inhabitants. Module III, FRENCH CANADIANS, is presented in a perpetual and rapid movement. This module brings to mind musical structures of French Canadians’ folk songs. Module IV, ENGLISH CANADIANS, is a Passacaglia, inspired by the well-known song Southern Cross, of English folk origin, and is presented in a polyphonic texture. Module V, OUR DAYS CANADIANS: Section A, LIMITLESS TIME – OUR DAYS CANADIANS, employs the compositional technique of simultaneous mobiles such as Module I, Roots, Section A. My music is based on my own imaginary folklore tunes of Indigenous Canadians, French Canadians, English Canadians, and New Canadians, living in peace here and now and musically symbolizes Canada’s multiculturalism. Section B, EPHEMERAL SPACE – CANADA’S VAST LAND, refers to Canada’s vast territory. The non-evolving, static form interfaces with folkloric material, such as Module I, Section B. Module VI, CELEBRATIONS, inspired by the rhythmic and melodic basis of O Canada, the nation-binding hymn composed by Calixa Lavallée, brings a culminating set of polyphonic and harmonic synthesis that concludes Canadian Soundscapes. Placed in a performance situation, in the Western tradition of the concert hall, the reminiscences of traditional oral musics are metamorphosed to reflect the diversity from which Canada has evolved.
