A complete performance of Into the Labyrinth includes a Prelude, 7 Labyrinths, a Coda, and a final Epiphany. It also includes visuals projected onto screens surrounding the performers.
The text for Into the Labyrinth was adapted by the composer from the works of the ancient Roman writer Ovid and is based on the legend of Theseus and the Minotaur. Briefly, this legend involves a creature called the Minotaur, half man and half bull, born of the union of Queen Pasiphaë of Crete with a milk-white bull. The Minotaur has been imprisoned in an underground labyrinth, constructed by the magician/inventor Daedalus on the orders of King Minos, the husband of Queen Pasiphaë. Every seven years, King Minos presents the Minotaur with a cannibalistic tribute, 14 Athenian youths. The Athenian hero Theseus determines to kill the Minotaur. With the aid of Ariadne, the love-sick daughter of King Minos, Theseus accomplishes this and also manages to find his way out of the labyrinth.
The text for Labyrinth 1 is adapted from Ovid’s Metamorphosis, of Labyrinth 2 and 3 from his The Art of Love, and of Labyrinth 4 from his Tristia.
The music for Into the Labyrinth is also a labyrinth, incorporating a variety of recurring musical themes and textures and a variety of musical genres. The Prelude (not heard on this occasion) is a microcosm of the entire piece. Labyrinth 1 is a shortened recapitulation of this prelude. Labyrinth 2 – Lust uses elements of rock music. Labyrinth 3 – Love uses elements of Argentinian tango music and of salsa music.
Note that the actor takes on a different persona in each Labyrinth: in Labyrinth 1 he is Ariadne, in Labyrinth 2 he is the Minotaur, in Labyrinth 3 he is Theseus, and in Labyrinth 4 he is again the Minotaur. By the very end of complete Into the Labyrinth, it is revealed that the actor is actually Daedalus himself, inventor of the Labyrinth.
