Critique: I am happy to recommend the piano sonata of Joan Hansen. It is a contemporary work which has something to say and which is rewarding to play. Its musical content has some challenges for the performer, demanding a good technique and a good sense of sonority. My students who have played it were enthusiastic and enjoyed learning it. It is a welcome addition to the repertory of worthwhile contemporary pieces. (Robin Wood, Professor Emeritus, University of Victoria, from score). Biographical note: Joan Hansen was born to a family of musicians in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and grew up in Mission, B.C. She furthered her musical training at the University of British Columbia, majoring in piano and in composition which she studied with Jean Coulthard. After teachng music in Vancouver schools, she moved to Victoria to teach Twentieth Century music and composition at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Ms. Hansen's works include chamber and solo pieces that have been broadcast on radio and television. She co-wrote the 'Music of Our Time' series with Jean Coulthard and David Duke, which is published by Waterloo Music. Ms. Hansen's piano pieces have been performed internationally and are listed in a number of exam and festival syllabi. She has received a number of scholarships and commissions and was recognized by the 'World Who's Who of Women' for "distinguished achievement." Ms. Hansen currently resides in Victoria, where she remains active as a composer, music educator, adjudicator and clinician.
