Canon for Three, originally written for three pianos in 1995, is heard here in a version, first performed in 1996, for piano and two vibraphones. Starting in the early 1990’s, I wrote several pieces which employ contrapuntal techniques such as canons and mirror structures or musical palindromes, techniques which are normally associated with melodic material. In these pieces, however, I applied these techniques instead to music that is generally harmonic in its conception. In Canon for Three, one of the piece composed in this manner, the three players play exactly the same pitch material, mostly chords or single notes, like a traditional musical canon. Although the music for the three players is strictly notated, it is, unlike a traditional musical score, not aligned vertically, and the players are asked to play rhythmically independently. As a result they follow each other in a fluid and flexible way, causing the musical material to overlap and form pointillistic clusters of sound.
