Sinewave was written during a study of the geometry of melody. Changes in density and tessitura follow the contour of a sinewave, giving the piece a circular structure in four sections spread over 480 beats. Changes of meter and tempo, and repetitions of an evocative Scottish melody, "Now You've Gane Awa", mark divisions of the piece into five. The 4:5 proportion reflects the point of divergence between the pentatonic and diatonic systems of tonality. The acoustic qualities and tunings of Chinese instruments are ideally suited to for a precise realization of this proportion, and the skill of the performers of the Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble has ensured richness detail in ornamentation. Sinewave is written so as to elude categories such as culture, tradition, and historical period. Sinewave was commissioned by Vancouver Pro Musica with the generous support of the Canada Council.
