Additional Information
TREMORS: Homage à Ligeti for piano solo was commissioned by the 2014 Montreal International Music Competition. This mandatory competition piece is in homage to the renowned composer György Ligeti since my initial inspiration came from his Continuum for harpsichord. As in that work, Tremors consists entirely of trills and tremolos that challenge the perform’s endurance and musicality. It is a piece of contrasts from the aggressive to the tender, from the dissonant to the harmonious, from the harsh to the melodious. It is in three continuos yet varied sections, each one rising to a dramatic climax only to release itself melodically downwards and begin again. Metaphorically it is like the Myth of Sisyphus who is cursed to perpetually push a rock up a mountain only to have it roll back down, and then start all over again. In the context of this piano competition Tremors, with its particular difficulties of tremolos and trills, presents a challenge of strength and endurance to the candidate; but also the performer is challenged to bring musical sense to the piece. As for the title the trills and tremolos are like tremors.
