Discrete Strains was commissioned by the Contact Contemporary Music ensemble as a companion piece to Brian Eno’s Discreet Music. Eno’s 1975 work is one of the first examples of ambient music, and was inspired by his experience of listening to music at very low volume levels while bed-ridden after a car accident. I wanted my work to share the reflective and meditative atmosphere of Eno’s music, but organized my material into discrete bits of contrasting musical ideas; where Eno’s Discreet Music is a very continuous and economical work comprised of two melodic phrases repeated with different synthesized timbres and different sound processing, Discrete Strains is comprised of ten contrasting sections that occasionally recur with some variation. The sections are identified with the names of Ontario towns that no longer exist. Integral to this piece is the live video mix created by media artist Sigi Torinus; her images also reflect Eno’s aesthetic and are discreetly tied to the musical gestures.
