These pieces were inspired, both in content and in form, by the 15th century French poet François Villon, inparticular, his Ballades en jargon, which celebrate his life in the criminal and homosexual underworlds of mediaeval Paris. My pieces, which taken all together mirror Villon’s ballad form, are seven different ways of looking at the same problem; seven courses of action which might be taken; seven progressive variations on a theme. In terms of sound quality they progress from complex to simple, from ambiguity to comforting familiarity. -Daryl Jamieson
