“To predict the future of a curve is to carry out a certain operation on its past.” - Norbert Wiener I stumbled upon this statement by cybernetics pioneer Norbert Wiener and, upon investigating the concept of a curve, found myself in an entire world of curves, with each one exhibiting distinctive characteristics and alluring possibilities. I chose a number of these curves which lent themselves to sonic imagery and concepts and applied them to the solo baritone saxophone writing of the piece, its melodic trajectories, exploration of extremes of register and dynamics, and the local and global structural design of the piece. The saxophone is processed by a series of evolving modules in MaxMSP and subsequently diffused and animated via an 8-channel sound in the performance space. the future of a curve was commissioned by saxophonist Holly DeCaigny for the North American Saxophone Alliance conference held in Lubbock, TX in 2016.
