Three Songs sets to music three poems written by Canadian poet Earle Birney: Wind-Chimes in a Temple Ruin, Plaza de Inquisición, and Curaçao. Place plays an important role regarding the character and affection that each poem captures, therefore the melodies and harmonies of each song draws from the traditional music of the country in which each poem was written: Japan, Spain and Curaçao respectfully. The music assigned to the first poem, Wind-Chimes in a Temple Ruin, imitates the performance practices and character of the shakuhachi flute and koto to evoke the calming atmosphere of a Buddhist temple. The music for Plaza de Inquisición, accents the irony and wit of the poem by imitating the characteristics of the traditional Spanish flamenco. The fun and playful character of the Latin merengue captures the joyous and carefree atmosphere of the Caribbean islands Birney experienced and then wrote about in the poem Curaçao.
