Rubaiyat are four-line poems favoured by Omar Khayyam, an 11 th century Persian poet. Of the many rubaiyat translated by the English poet Edward FitzGerald in the 19th century, I chose six that were related in their hedonistic/fatalistic expression, some of them - "A jug of wine, a loaf of bread and thou", "Ah, moon of my delight", "The moving finger writes" - universally known and quoted. Soprano and flute seemed to me an ideal medium for intimate communication in sound.
