Premiere
The work has been performed twice by Simon Fraser University classes as part of their school performance. Once in 2012 under the direction of Sutrisno Hartana and once in 2013 under the direction of Michael O'Neill.
We were travelling on a train from Chennai to Varanasi. There was all the time in the world for time. I began to write this piece - something mysterious, for a ceremony unknown. We arrived to Varanasi and soon were at the banks of the Ganges. With the indelible mark of that experience in mind I finished the piece in Chennai seeking to bring together in one work the beautiful resonance of temple bells and gamelan. “The Chennai Gongs” was first performed by students of Simon Fraser University on Gamelan Madu Sari.
