My original idea for this piece involved a pretty complex collage of German, Czech and Jewish music. But when, in my research, I came across this moving song, I just fell in love with it. So I dropped everything else and wrote this simple arrangement... This song comes from the anthology Jewish Folk Songs by Ruth Rubin (© Ruth Rubin, 1989). Yiddish text by Leah Rudnitsky (1916-1943); English Translation by Ruth Rubin. The following information is provided by Rubin: "The shooting of 4,000 Jewish men, women and children at Ponar, (outside of Vilna, Lithuania) on April 5, 1943, left a grievous impression on the young poet, who herself, soon after, perished at the hands of the Nazis. A three-year-old child, wandering in the streets after the roundup moved the poet to write this lullaby. The melody may have been adapted from a song by the Soviet composer Polonsky." English text: Sleep my baby, hungry baby All the birdies are asleep In the dugout, at your cradle, A stranger softly weeps. You once had a home, my baby, A mother and a father as well. Your mother was shot and died, in misery, They stoned your father as he fell. Sleep my baby, hungry baby, The moon is fast asleep. In the dugout, at your cradle, The stranger still softly weeps. This work has been commissioned by and is dedicated to Janice Jackson.
