Premiere
October 25, 2005, Banker's Hall, Calgary; Ensemble Resonance; Colleen Athparia, conductor.
Your Call is an exploration of romantic wishful thinking, and the feeling we sometimes get that the universe is sending us personal messages. The way the text evolves owes a great debt to the whimsical brilliance of American poet John Yau. The harmony plays with the notion that many atonal structures are only a bass note away from being jazz chords. We often work hard to prevent tonal implications in atonal music, but here they bleed in wherever they feel like. Always in mind is the unique flair of the musicians of Ensemble Resonance. This piece was part of a cross commissioning project (ultimately partially funded by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts) involving New Works Calgary with Ensemble Resonance and the Edmonoton Composers' Concert Society with Saint Crispin's Chamber Ensemble.
