One of my discoveries over the last couple of years has been the partial capo, in particular the one that covers three strings. This allows the guitarist to play in the transposed equivalent of DADGAD, a very popular tuning in the finger-style world. The tuning takes one towards folk styles and this piece flirts with ragtime, bluegrass, with a nod to Windham Hill records along the way. The suite was composed in reverse order starting with the exuberance of the final work
Blue
. The penultimate piece is tender – I think of it a healing work or a prayer. Music can go places where words cannot and this piece coaxes the listener with tender flourishes.
Gold
and
Red
, the first two pieces function as preludes to the final ones, establishing similar moods in a shorter time frame. This work was premiered in Calgary at Guitarfest West on two separate occasions.
Green
and
Blue
were performed in August 2014 while
Gold
and
Red
played at the 2015 festival. It is recorded on a CD Old Wood – New Seeds [Winter Longing Music WL000116], which is available through the Canadian Music Centre or through any number of digital download locations. The score is in two staves, notation, which gives the actual sounding pitches of the music and tablature. For the tablature I have used a zero on the 5th, 4th and 3rd strings to designate notes that are under the capo, they are actually played at the 2nd fret but require no fingers to play. With so much different information on each page I have kept musical indications to a minimum. This work is dedicated to Emma Rush the very fine guitarist from Hamilton, Ontario Canada. Upon discovering that we both had a great affection for Gerald Garcia’s
