66671, all that is solid melts into the air rev. 2012, for string quintet, AR3006, Scott Edward Godin, 00:17:17
Originally conceived as a clarinet quintet, all that is solid melts into the air was premiered alongside a new quintet by American composer Elliot Carter (b. 1908). Carter continues writing into his second century, and I find it fascinating that one composer who has experienced so much and written so much music (over such a long period) is viewed as a “modernist” composer. What is “modernity,” and what does it mean to be “modern?” My composition flirts with this elusive concept, illuminating various facets and individuals associated with the modernist experience. The first part of the work reveals two writers associated with modernity: Charles Baudelaire and Michel Foucault. The music expresses the tactile, immediacy of modernity, incorporating a language stylistically linked to the world of Elliot Carter. The second part of the composition reveals two architectural contributors of the Modernist era: Le Corbusier and Robert Moses. Here the focus turns from the harmonic language to the formal construction itself. PART ONE: The Modern Voicei. The Heroism of Modern Life: Charles Baudelaire (1821 - 1867)ii. The Prison of Modernity: Michel Foucault (1926 - 1984)PART TWO: The Architecture of Modernityiii. The City of Tomorrow: Le Corbusier (1887 - 1965)iv. In the Forest of Symbols: Robert Moses (1888 - 1981)
