When I approached B.C. journalist/poet Stephen Hume about writing the libretto for my cantata 'Sour Gas Song' we exchanged samples of our work by way of introduction. I gave him a music tape, and he gave me two books of his published poetry -- one of them 'Signs Against An Empty Sky.'
When I read these poems from 'Signs' I immediately heard them as music. I find in them a combination of beauty, boldness and irony that echo the British Columbia spirit.
