Valence IV
is the last piece in a cycle of independent chamber works that explore the opposition of continuity and discontinuity in musical discourse and form. This work, for an ensemble of clarinet, trumpet, percussion, piano, violin and cello, can be understood as bearing both of these opposing qualities; fermatas, interruptions, and a lack of long-term development characterize the macro-level, while at the same time many brief passages bear local-level directional qualities such as use of motive, cadential gestures, and short-term processes.
Valence IV
was written for NEWPRISM Ensemble and was premiered on November 17, 2012, at 2640 Space in Baltimore.
