This is the exciting debut recording on Centrediscs of Québec composer Ana Sokolovic. Speaking of Sokolovic’s music, conductor Véronique Lacoix says, “From the beginning, Ana amazed both our musicians and audience with the efficiency of her many-coloured and extremely evocative writing. Inspired from her native Balkan States, her imaginative style aptly integrates many of these elements: inflexions of the spoken language, particular dance rhythms and a kind of melodic emphasis that you find only in a culture where a long tradition of singing exists in everyday life.”
“There is something quite extraordinary about Sokolovic’s capacity to present a vast breadth of musical expression within subtle but well-delineated boundaries. With such an infinitely-varied and hugely evocative palette of colours, rhythms, tempos, moods and effects, a lesser composer might easily lose focus and therefore their listener; but not Sokolovic. Her music is remarkable, connective and immensely creative. Its performance on this CD, by the ECM, is fabulous and exemplary in every way.”
– Alison Melville, Wholenote
“Those of you who have taken little or no account of the Quebec music scene have a lot to catch up on, and this is a good point to start.”
– Peter Grahame Woolf, Musical Pointers, UK
