'Voices in Time', title of the last novel by the late Canadian writer Hugh MacLennan, is one of the eleven projected works in a cycle for various ensembles based on Lee's research into ancient Chinese philosophy, poetry and music. To-date, pieces completed in this cycle are, 'In the Beginning was the End' (accordion, harpsichord, 1989), 'Hsieh Lu Hsing' (guzheng, di, shao, er hu, for 2 players, 1991), 'entends, entends le passé qui marche... (piano & tape, 1992) and 'Tangram' (bass clarinet, harpsichord and tape, 1992). As in Chinese music where sounds of nature were revered and often emulated, water sounds from Kananaskis were recorded, transformed in the electroacoustic studio and integrated into the composition on tape. The tape part, representing the flow of time, was realized at the electroacoustic studio and the University of Calgary.
This work exists in two versions: chamber ensemble version and chamber orchestra version. The chamber ensemble version was commissioned by the New Music Concerts with the assistance of a Canada Council grant and premiered in 1994 in Toroto under the direction of Robert Aitken.

Since 1979, I have been studying Chinese music, medieval and classical poetry, in particular the ideology, philosophy and notation of qin (Chinese 7-string zither) music. The knowledge absorbed and material collected have integrated and become an important part of my creative voice and to date, seven pieces have been completed, each representing a particular time in Chinese history which in turn, reflects our own existence. Here is a summary of the complete cycle:
In the Beginning was the End (1989) accordion, harpsichord 300 -2255 B.C.
Hsieh Lu Hsing (1991) guzheng, di/shao, er hu 2205 -770 B.C.
entends, entends le passé qui marche... (1992) piano, soundfiles 221 B.C. - 220 A.D.
Tangram (1992) bass clarinet, harpsichord, soundfiles 221 - 265 A.D.
Voices in Time (1992-94) large ensemble, soundfiles, electronics 618 - 907 A.D.
Fei Yang (2001) string quartet, accordion 960 - 1279 A.D.
arrow of being, arrow of becoming (1997) string quartet 1271 - 1368 A.D.
Parting at Yang Kuan (2004) er hu, guzheng, marimba 1368 - 1644 A.D.
Four Winds from Heaven (2005) women's choir 1644 - 1911A.D.
Secret of the Seven Stars (2006-) soprano, sound files and 8-channel speakers Present
and the end is the beginning (2007- ) choirs, guqin, orchestra Future
All the compositions in the cycle seek for a balance between elements of continuity and elements of changes. Musical material, form, and compositional technique are the result of this concern. Many works have incorporated Chinese poetry or qin music written at the time; in some, the intonation of a classical poem is transcribed as melodic line or qin music as melodic motives and in others, the rhythmic material is based on the rhythm of selected poems or qin music of the period.

Voici un résumé du cycle entier : In the Beginning was the End (1989) accordéon, clavecin 300 – 2255 av. J.-C. Hsieh Lu Hsing (1991) guzheng, di/shao, erhu 2205 – 770 av. J.-C. entends, entends le passé qui marche... (1992) piano, enregistrements d’archives 221 av. J.-C. – 220 ap. J.-C. Tangram (1992) clarinette basse, clavecin, enregistrements d’archives 221 – 265 ap. J.-C. Voices in Time (1992-94) grand ensemble, enregistrements d’archives, sons électronique 618 – 907 ap. J.-C. Fei Yang (2001) quatuor à cordes, accordéon 960 – 1279 ap. J.-C. arrow of being, arrow of becoming (1997) quatuor à cordes 1271 – 1368 ap. J.-C. Parting at Yang Kuan (2004) erhu, guzheng, marimba 1368 – 1644 ap. J.-C. Four Winds from Heaven (2005) chœur féminin 1644 – 1911 ap. J.-C. Secret of the Seven Stars (2006-) soprano, enregistrements d’archives et enceintes à 8 canaux Présent and the end is the beginning (2007- ) chœurs, guqin, orchestre Futur Toutes les compositions du cycle visent l’équilibre entre continuité et changement.
