Critical Mass, as the title would imply has a number of connotations, all of which are applicable to this piece. The scoring is for a solo instrument of any kind and 'tape'. The score utilizes a form of proportional notation that used the visual proximity of notes to determine rhythmic/duration values. This allows for a very 'elastic' performance and guarantees that no two performances (as much as they ever could be) will be the same.
The 'tape' part consists of three levels or layers of information. These levels are not hierarchical as much as they are representative of the attributes of chaos and order. During the piece the performer interacts with the 'tape' part and will modify their interpretation according to the interaction.
