Premiere
09/06/10 Koerner Hall Toronto Luminato, Tapestry, Gryphon Trio Conductor: Wayne Strongman
14 seconds is from the oratorio Dark Star Requiem, originally the 5th movement of a 14 movement work for piano trio, 4 soloists, chorus, and 2 percussionists. It was premiered during the 2010 Luminato Festival in Toronto with Tapestry company, the Gryphon Trio, the Elmer Iseler Singers, and Ryan Scott and Mark Duggan, percussion. The libretto for the work, written by poet Jill Battson, deals extensively with AIDS. 14 seconds refers to a statistic circulating in the late 1980's and 90's that stated that “every 14 seconds, someone dies of AIDS”. As such, this trio movemenet is structured in 14 sections each 14 seconds long.
This work was commissioned by Tapestry New Opera Works, Luminato, and the University of Toronto at Scarborough.
