As a constant music listener, especially in transit, I’ve noticed the frustrating tendency for the wires of my headphones to tangle, no matter my efforts to keep them straight. However, the tendency for wires at rest to tangle is not so much a tendency as a near-mathematical certainty. According to knot theory, any wire/string/etc. of any length will knot in storage – there is only one way for a wire to be straight, but a plethora of ways it can get tangled. Although agitating these wires, even with a slight movement, will cause tangling often within mere seconds, even “stationary” strings will knot. This piece is divided into two uninterrupted movements that play with the ideas of stasis and line entanglement. “wires at rest (tend to tangle)” is the result of being selected as a finalist for the 2015 Costello Competition for Composition, presented by the Philadelphia-based harp organization The Lyra Society. It was the winning composition.
