Premiere
04/04/2008 Sackville Curling Club Sackville, NB Helen Pridmore, soprano Chenoa Anderson, flute Ian Crutchley, electronics
Initially I was asked to write a single “cabaret song” but in thinking about the project found myself considering what it means to step away from one’s normal musical language to intentionally embrace something of a musical cliché: certain idioms would be expected to give the music authenticity. In the end I found myself working through a large number of these elements, not satisfied with a single excursion into the cabaret ideal. The Interludes seemed to follow naturally as a further stepping away from my usual practices to perhaps hint at another level of cabaret, that of the Dadaists. Commissioned by: Chenoa Anderson and Helen Pridmore
