Canticum Fratris Solis (The Canticle to Brother Sun) was written by St. Francis of Assisi in 1224-26. It is one of the earliest known texts in the original (medieval Umbrian) Italian language. That St. Francis chose to use Italian rather than the official clerical Latin is a reflection of his well-known humility: he felt closer to birds, the sun and moon and common people than he did to church hierarchy. Accordingly, my setting of these verses aims at a folk-like simplicity that portrays the emotional side of St. Francis' faith. The kokles and accordion in the Altera Veritas ensemble help to give this folk flavour. I have been inspired by late medieval vocal music, but have not tried to emulate it precisely. Canticum Fratris Solis was commissioned by Schola Cantorum Riga with funds from the Latvian Cultural Capital Foundation. The first performance took place at Riga Cathedral, September 24, 2007.
