This work is dedicated to Barbara Kingsolver whose fiction and essays have made me laugh, cry, and think since I was introduced to them in the early 90’s. In her forward to the book Last Stand she introduced me to the poetry of Linda Hogan, which has brought me tremendous joy, as well as two song cycles. It was an essay in Kingsolver’s book Small Wonders that inspired Dissolving Boundaries. It tells the story of a toddler that went missing in a northern province of Iran on the eve of the 1992 gulf war. The toddler found his way to a cave in a mountain five kilometers from his home. When the villagers found him, days later, a mother bear was nursing him. Kingsolver juxtaposes this story with the response that her own young daughter had while watching televised reports of the invasion of Iraq. Through this piece there are two female narrative voices, an American mother watching her distressed daughter and a Persian mother worried about her lost child. Short monologues mark these changes of place and voice as the guitarist delivers lines of a news reader. I have fictionalized the narrative by adding the Persian mother’s voice and depicting the recovery of the child. Special thanks go to the amazing musicians Maria Soulis – mezzo-soprano, and Tanya Charles - violin who helped record the work. Special thanks also to Alan Bell for helping to engineer, edit and mix the project. The guitar tuning is an unusual one with the sixth string in C and the fifth in Ab, I have indicated the frets for notes on those strings with roman numerals.
