Premiere
Vancouver, BC; Vancouver Aquatic Centre, 4 Dec 2012 Aventa Ensemble (presented by Redshift Music) Conductor: Bill Linwood
Under Bleak Skies is a musical lament for the ocean. I wrote this piece for an ocean-themed concert, and found myself consumed with thoughts about the impact of humans on our oceans. Currently, in British Columbia, there is a proposed pipeline to move oil from Alberta’s Tar Sands to the coast. Research is clear that this proposal would create a substantial risk of an oil spill in our coastal waters. We are also constantly bombarded with news of other symptoms warning that our oceans are in danger: higher PH levels, orca whale numbers dropping lower each year, fish populations that are near collapse, and the vast plastic gyre in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In the beginning of the piece the sea is calm and two birds circle overhead, playing together in the wind. However, an ominous feeling of alarm gradually enters the musical texture and rises until the whole ensemble cries out in panic. In the end, a solo voice searches for her lost companion.
